It’s known as “the Super Bowl for black college bands,” and it packs the Georgia Dome every January. Eight college marching bands from historically black colleges and universities will showcase their music and showmanship at this annual invitational event, but it will also spotlight the talents of Grammy-winning Atlanta singer and songwriter Monica.

Monica will take the field at the Battle of the Bands on Jan. 28 just weeks before the scheduled release of her seventh album, “New Life.” You can get a taste of the new album on the Georgia native’s website, which features the video for the track “Until It’s Gone.” You can pre-order the album there, too.

Tickets for the event, which begins at 3 p.m. Jan. 28, are available at Ticketmaster or at the Georgia Dome Box Office. Tickets are $10-$12.

Grammy award winning singer, actress and entrepreneur Monica is set to heat up the inaugural Reggae Rhythm & Blues Festival in the Big Apple this Labor Day weekend. The soulful siren will take the stage with ten-time Grammy award winner Kenny Babyface’ Edmonds as the festival’s Rhythm & Blues headliners at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens on Sunday, September 4th.

Monica, whose latest single “Anything (To Find You)” with Rick Ross and Lil Kim is burning its way up the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop chart, established herself as a musical force when her break-out hit “Don’t Take It Personal” topped the R&B/Hip Hop chart in 1995. At the tender age of 15, she became the youngest female ever to have two singles back-to-back hit #1 on the Billboard R&B chart. To date she has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide, earning a Grammy Award for 1998′s “The Boy is Mine” with Brandy, and a spot on Billboard’s Top Artists of the Year chart in 2010. She has been featured on television sitcoms Living Single, Beverly Hills 90210, and Felicity, and in 2009 landed a reality series of her own, Monica: Still Standing, on Black Entertainment Television (BET). Her 2010 album Still Standing debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200.

In addition to Babyface Edmonds, Monica will share the Reggae Rhythm & Blues stage with Dancehall superstar Mavado, acclaimed Roots Reggae crooner Tarrus Riley, and Soca King Machel Montano. Grammy award-winning rapper Nelly will give back to his local community, by performing a benefit concert to help raise funds for a local college. Nelly is slated to perform at venue The Pageant in St. Louis later on this month, along with Grammy award-winning R&B artist/actress Monica.

The pair will be on hand to help raise money for the Vatterott College Scholarship Fund, to benefit high achieving students who are not able to afford college on their own.

“I see myself in the students of Vatterott,” Nelly told AllHipHop.com. “Just as I reached my goals, I want to help them reach theirs. I am happy to help those who are trying to help themselves.”

The entire proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Vatterott College Scholarship Fund, which was founded in 2010.

“Having an artist of Nelly’s caliber show such commitment to our students is a great honor for us. His commitment to education is evident,” added Pam Bell, Chief Executive Officer and President of Vatterott Educational Centers, Inc. “We’re proud to partner with one of St. Louis’ most talented entertainers to help our students attain their educational goals.”

Trey Songz toasted to the close of his “Passion, Pain & Pleasure” tour last friday at New York City’s Beacon Theatre. His tourmates Monica and Dondria joined him onstage for the finale before he heads out on the road with Usher in November.

Trey showered praise upon his tourmate. “What can I say about this woman? Sixteen years she been in this business,” he said while Monica stood by his side. “She’s a strong example of a beautiful, black, strong mother, woman, sister. I love you and everything you stand for.”

Mo echoed the sentiments. “Last night was beautiful. U helped make the touring experience wonderful for me, my children & fam. And I truly thank you,” she tweeted to Trey after the show.

Opening act Monica was 14 when she dropped her first album in 1995; there was no Facebook, no Twitter and definitely no celebrity blogs, a sphere in which the now-29-year-old Monica has at times found herself a target. “I know who I am and whose I am,” she said in response. But her commanding set was about expressing gratitude and empowerment. “Where all my real strong women at?” she asked, stalking the stage in a sequined superhero-inspired bodysuit.

The singer’s alto, with its soaring vibrato, is a wonder. Sixteen years in the game, the former teen R&B queen proved why she’s “Still Standing,” using her tight opening set to revisit her early chart classics like “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days),” “Before You Walk Out of My Life” and the still-swagged-out (Jermaine Dupri!) “First Night,” but also recent hits like “So Gone,” “Everything to Me” and “Love All Over Me.” Fawning fans repaid the overjoyed star by singing along word-for-word and shouting their approval.
